The Music

Saturday night my wife and I saw the band Chicago in concert. The band has been around since the 60’s and has only 3 founding members left. What’s interesting is that nobody really seems to care that out of the 10 people on stage, only 3 are originals. The music is the music. I believe the same holds true when it comes to great teams and organizations. The “music” is culture. The way people work together with shared purpose to ultimately delight the ones that matter the most…the fans (customers). Great teams and organizations like bands, invest in a foundation that allows them to be intentional about who they bring into the band. That intention shows up through two lenses. First, does the person fit in? If we are going to be in close quarters together, everyone has to vibe. The second lens is what the new band member adds to the mix. Tragically, sometimes new band members aren’t allowed to add. They are forced into playing someone else’s exact parts. That keeps the band from evolving and perpetuates the status quo. There is a way to intelligently design maximizing contribution from band members. You just have to be open to what’s possible and have the courage to think differently into action. #truecollaboration#leadership#culture#talent#chicago
